GETTING CONTROL OF ALLERGIES
Health A-Z | June 24, 2010Do you know how allergies work? The first step in the chronology would be to come in contact with an allergen, as they’re called. They are the items or the factors that you are allergic to. They are in the form of small particles – pollens, molds and animal dander to name a few. The easiest method to control allergies, then, is to avoid contact with the allergen. This can be done when you’re aware of what your child is allergic to.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT ALLERGEN IS THE TRIGGER FOR MY CHILD?
The simplest way to answer this question would be to use just one simple concept – OBSERVATION. Observe your child when he/she gets an allergic reaction. You could, alternatively, keep a diary that clues you in about the commonalities between several allergy attacks. By doing so, you will be able to figure out what allergen is playing the role of ‘the trigger’ in the case of your baby.
KEEP THESE IN MIND
Are your child’s allergies seasonal?- Indoors or outdoors – where are they more likely to occur?
- Are the pets causing it?
- Do other people in the family have allergies?
If, in spite of all these observations being considered, the cause of allergies still remains uncertain, the doctors can conduct skin testing to determine the root cause of a child’s allergies.
CONTROL ALLERGIES – INDOOR ALLERGENS
The most common factors that determine allergies when the child is indoors would have to include dust mites, cockroaches and pet dander. No matter how many times you clean your house, these small particles may remain behind, making their presence felt in the form of the sneezes of your child.
Easier ways of handling the situation would include these –
Keep the number of carpets in the house to a minimal.- Keep the child away from basements or cellars of sorts. No damp places.
- Ditch the curtains in your child’s room and substitute it with blinds.
- If it’s the family pet that’s causing a problem, you could try to bathe him/her (the pet) on a weekly basis, to try and keep the allergen away.
CONTROL ALLERGIES – OUTDOOR ALLERGENS
This is the more difficult of the two, when it comes to controlling allergens. It is almost impossible to keep away from particles that are flying around in the air outside.
In order to prevent allergies caused by outdoor allergens, keep these in mind –
- Keep the bedroom windows closed
- In cases where you prefer air drying your child’s clothes, make sure you do it inside the house
- Do not reuse clothes without washing them, especially if the child has played in them
Keep these tips in mind, and hope that your child doesn’t have to suffer from any allergen triggered allergies.
