Leukaemia, or blood cancer, is a fatal disease wherein a huge amount of abnormal cells is generated by the bone marrow. I am sure that even though you must have heard about this disease, but still would not properly know about its types, causes, and symptoms. Frankly speaking, the cause of this disease is yet unknown to the world. Any victim of such disease needs compassion and support from family members, friends, and relatives; instead of just from a doctor. Sometimes, it is so severe that patient might not be able to live longer, as the symptoms might exhibit themselves at quite a later stage. Alas! We too tend to be afraid of this. But, let me tell you that instead of welcoming fear and despair, we need to invite hope and timely, appropriate treatment. Realize that positive vibrations are filled immense power that might change the life of the victim. Lastly, remember, “Cancer is meant to censor fear of death”.

Leukaemia Types

Leukaemia is of different types and each of them is categorized according to the affected cell type. Here are the two major categories in this regard.

  • acute leukaemiaChronic Leukaemia
Progresses gradually and affects more number of cells that are mature.
  • Acute Leukaemia
Progresses fast if not taken care through chemotherapy and affects more number of cells that are immature. It grows rapidly from the earliest cells’ forms in the immature cells (blasts) of bone marrow. Such type of leukaemia is a rare one, but mostly common among children and youngsters. A positive look towards this type of disease is that the survival rate of such victims is better than compared to the older people.
Leukaemia Symptoms

In leukaemia, the bone marrow is pressed in such a manner that it is shifted to smaller and smaller areas. This leads to less production of cells and a few symptoms from the below list. If you observe any of the stated symptoms, report the same to your doctor. Please do not be afraid because most of the times the diagnosis turns out to report some other disease instead of leukaemia due to similarity in symptoms. Here are the symptoms.

  • An abnormal pale appearance (anaemia)
  • Fatigue
  • Pain in the joints
  • Frequent infections like sore throats
  • Nosebleeds and staining (for acute leukaemia) mostly with absence of any blow or fall
Leukaemia Diagnosis

Acute leukaemia is usually easy to diagnose. Listed are the ways to diagnose leukaemia.

  • Blood tests for many types of leukaemia. Generally, the acute leukaemia cell (blasts) moves within the blood that can be observed during the test.
  • Bone marrow test to diagnose the cell type. This aids doctors to identify the best treatment.
Leukaemia Treatment

Now-a-days, medical treatments are very much preferable, as a never-ending, increasing list of children and young people become well absolutely with it. Basically, there are two types of treatments given to leukaemia patients, which are:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Bone marrow transplantation

Recognizing that the medical treatment is not likely to be pleasant, special hospital staff is skillfully trained to provide maximum possible support to the leukaemia patients.

Chemotherapy

In case of acute leukaemia, victims will be provided with a special unit for investigation and treatment. Such patients are treated with chemotherapy that is given through veins.
Mostly, chemotherapy is given in parts until a variable period of 4 to 6 months, of which each one is of just four to five days. This destroys all the rapidly multiplying cells including the normal and cancer cells. The effects of chemotherapy are:

  • Drop in blood counts, which is recovered later (blood transfusions are done and patient remains in the hospital substantially for a long time after chemotherapy)
  • Infection and bleeding
  • Hair loss that re-grows after 3-4 months
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea

Bone Marrow Transplantation

The doctor might recommend a bone marrow transplant along with chemotherapy. In transplant, cells are used that might be of the patient or donated by a brother, sister, or by a donor who might not be related to the victim. This actually becomes a very large dose and aggressive form of treatment. Therefore, it is preferred for youngsters and patients who are fit to undergo this dual dose.
