Pick Up the Phone and Call the Doc
Pregnancy | September 1, 2010Pregnancy could be a time of joys for every woman who stands at the threshold of motherhood. Along with this, it could also be a time of smaller trials and tribulations. It is a time when your body is going to see changes that it has never dealt with before (unless you’ve had a pregnancy before).
When you sit at home at night, and there is a small emergency that might need medical attention, it sometimes becomes difficult to figure out whether or not the problem is serious enough for a late night phone call that might wake up your poor little sleep-deprived doctor from his/her sleep.
We’re here to help you out with exactly this situation. When these are the symptoms that you’re dealing with; do not hesitate to pick up the phone.
Bleeding, Pain, Chills or a Fever:
While having a sensitive cervix might amount to light bleeding or spotting n the case of pregnant women, if it turns to moderate or heavy bleeding from the vagina, it could be a serious matter. You need to be worried if this bleeding is accompanied by fever, chills or some sort of pain.
Headache, Dizziness and Fainting:
If you find yourself being cornered by a headache all the time and if this is accompanied with the blurring of vision and/or fainting, you must find a spot where you can sit down. Ensure that you have someone sitting with you while you chat with your doctor on the phone. Dehydration might be the reason behind these symptoms, so you could try drinking a glass of water; and then lie down on your left side for a while. The feelings should subside.
Frequent Urination Often Accompanied by Pain:
Frequent urination is generally said to be a common complaint amongst women who are pregnant. If this is accompanied by pain and a burning sensation, it is no longer common. If this is the case, then it points in the direction of a bladder infection. Wearing cotton underwear might help in this case; you could also try avoiding pantyhose and leggings.
Severe bouts of pain to hit the pelvis area:
Quite a few pregnant women might complain of experiencing some pain in the pelvis region because pregnancy tends to put pressure on this region. In cases when this pain becomes severe or unbearable, it might be a sign for something bigger and nastier. Do not hesitate to call the doctor.
Extremely High Fever:
Well, it goes without saying that none of us like falling ill. A fever isn’t actually the prettiest thing to hit us! When you run a fever along with being pregnant, it could actually pose for a health hazard in the case of your baby. The development and growth of your baby would depend on how your body maintains healthy temperatures; which must remain consistent. If a high fever is experienced during early pregnancy, it could even lead to a miscarriage. In later stages of pregnancy, it might not affect your baby as much, but could be cause for worry because fever is generally the symptom to accompany infections.
Heavy Vaginal Discharge:
If you end up experiencing a rush of fluid before the time is right for your water to break, it would mean that a doctor should be summoned immediately. If your discharge is accompanied by contractions, it could spell further trouble.
Swelling up of the hands, face or feet:
If your hands and face suddenly look swollen when you’re already in your second or third trimester, it might be a sign that everything isn’t right. Preeclampsia might be the culprit. It is a condition like high blood pressure that affects pregnant women and this is considered a very serious complication to affect pregnant women.
