The Timeline of Growth – Trimester One

Pregnancy | August 19, 2010

You’ve found out, only recently, that you’re going to a mommy. First things first, congratulations woman! You’re now, officially, in one of the most exciting phases of your lives. The journey hereon is going to be exciting for your body, as well as your baby.

You might want to know what it is that is happening inside your uterus when your baby is growing. Use this timeline to keep an eye on how your baby’s life is developing on the inside of your body.

Baby’s Due In…
40-35 Weeks

At this point of time, the growth of a baby will be slow. This is the earliest stage of pregnancy. The embryo will measure about 0.05 millimeters at this point of your pregnancy; and the changes begin to take place. The central nervous system and the heart, along with the skeleton of your baby are beginning to develop.

34 Weeks

Regardless of the miniscule size of your baby, at this stage you can measure your baby from the top of the child’s head (crown) to its buttocks (rump). The baby will, in most cases, measure around 0.08 to 0.16 inches.

33 Weeks

Your baby starts growing faster at this stage. By this time, the baby has doubled in size, when compared to the previous week of your pregnancy. The baby will now measure between a good 0.16 inches to 0.2 inches. At the end of this week, your baby might even grow to around 0.44 inches.

First trimester32 Weeks

By this time, your baby’s organs and basic structure has fallen into place. The baby, however, still measures only a mere inch. This is the last week of your baby being called an ‘embryo’. Beginning with the next week, it will officially be called a ‘fetus’.

31 Weeks

0.9 inches to around 1.2 inches is now the size of your baby from crown to rump. The unborn baby inside you has now begun growing at a rapid speed. The baby will now look a little more physically recognizable as a human now; because he/she is beginning to develop shape.

30 Weeks

The growth of your baby is now reaching ‘rapid fire’ levels. This is the week where onwards you can officially chart the baby’s weight. Now the length of your baby has reached almost 2 inches – from crown to rump. The small little baby will still weigh around 0.18 of an ounce.

29 Weeks

The baby is now going to weigh around 0.3 of an ounce and will measure up to around 2.4 inches at a maximum. The baby’s head, at this point in time, is almost half the size of the entire length of its body.

28 Weeks

Your unborn baby would have doubled in length by this point in time; and will now weigh somewhere between 0.3 to 0.5 ounces. The measure from crown to rump will come up to a good 2 and ½ inches. The better way to measure the overall growth of the baby at this time would be to do so using his/her height rather than weight. All of the organs have formed by now; but they still continue developing with time.

27 Weeks

The baby will now weigh somewhere around 0.5 – 0.7 of an ounce; and measures around 2.6 to 3.1 inches. The eyes of your baby will now move closer to each other; and the ears will begin to move to the sides of his/her head. The external genitalia would have developed enough for the gender of the child to be determined.

26 Weeks

This is the week where the digestive system of your baby becomes capable of producing the kind of contractions that can help push the food through the bowels. The baby is also capable of performing actions like absorbing sugar now. The pituitary gland has now begun producing hormones.

25 Weeks

This is the last week of the first trimester. Fine hair will cover the entire body of the baby; and the skin will be very thin. Many babies will be seen sucking their thumbs by this stage. The bones would have formed by this time; and will be seen to be growing harder and stronger.
