Why Are Mothers At Stress?
Stress Management | November 26, 2009The factors causing stress among mothers
Children are a source of joy, love, and innocence. The bond between the mother and child cannot find an equivalent. Also, it is a huge responsibility to care for one’s child. The responsibility of taking the child from the phase of infancy to the phase of adulthood can be too demanding. Some mothers who find this responsibility too taxing are more vulnerable to experience stress. While some stressful events may be unique to mother owing to cultural differences, the majority of them are universal. An alarming percentage of women experience stress in the areas mentioned below:
- Time constraints
Mothers need to devote time to ensure proper care and upbringing of their children. The additional demands from the spouse or family members leave most women short of time. Mothers find it increasingly difficult to fit into their busy schedules the duties of laundry, spending quality time with their kids, time to relax, and many more. Most mothers would feel that 24 hours are just not sufficient for all the activities that demand their attention. - Financial constraints
Childcare facilities such as employing a nanny and using a day care facility can burn a hole in your pocket. In other cases, mothers find it difficult to carry on with their jobs and will eventually sacrifice them. Thus, providing the children with the best care can prove to be an extremely costly. The budget of the family gets tightened as children grow. New clothing, newer activities, and further education only add to the financial worries. However, mothers would know that all the trouble is worth the joy of their children. - Handling relationships
Mothers need to maintain a healthy relationship with their kids. This relationship can affect the mother’s relationship with her spouse. This constraint in the relationship with the life partner usually occurs when the children are young. Mothers usually find it hard to strike a balance between the relationship with their children and relationship with their spouse. The interactions with the spouse decrease and so do the sexual encounters. Time for friends and pals goes for a toss with the increasing demands of parenting. Mothers who are single are affected the most in this regard keeping dating in mind. - Instinct to Protect
The instinct to protect comes naturally to mothers. Mothers have a general tendency to perceive the world as full of danger. Therefore, the care and protection that the mothers shower on their children can sometimes cross the limits. From eating food to climbing walls, all tasks seem filled with peril. When children enter college, the dangers seem insurmountable. In addition, mothers tend to fret over the child’s social environment and behavior. This would mean that the instinct to protect only deepens. - Self Doubt
A common fear among mothers is that they are doing their best in the upbringing of their children. Each child is unique and brings in his or her own unique traits and characteristics. Growth and change are an inevitable part of child growth. Therefore, mothers cannot let their guard down even for a moment. Mothers, therefore, are constantly in the process of self-assessment and gaining valuable insights into the world of parenting. They often turn to parenting experts who offer diverse and often conflicting opinions on tricky situations. Mothers want to be the best at what they do and this often means being wise and staying one step ahead. As a mother, there is never a shortage of problems to solve and crises to deal with. Mothers tend to question their own abilities. Therefore, when mothers commit mistakes, it is easy for them to feel disappointed. This is all part of being a great mother and they never shirk their responsibilities. - Time for oneself
Most mothers find it impossible to devote a fraction of time for themselves. Popular relaxation activities among such as visits to the spa and indulgence in hobbies do not find a place in the schedule of a mother. However, for optimal health one needs some time for oneself to relax and de-stress. Only when you can care for yourself you can be in a position to care for others, especially your loving kids.
Therefore, burdened with the responsibility of child care, it is essential for the mother to maintain her health.
